Crystalline Morphologies is a label started by artist and musician Gabie Strong, with a focus on experimental and drone music informed by her own practice. Guitar, percussion, lyricism, and electronic composition figure prominently - raw, nuanced and emotional sounds that are sometimes uncommon even within their own genres. Primary energy is devoted to releasing unclassifiable, composed and improvised work by feminist artists, whose contributions are overlooked in the context of avant garde and improvised music.
The label, an offshoot of Gabie’s radio program of the same name, references the mineralogical process of crystal growth - the process by which organic materials take shape under the influence of environment and time. As a musical concept, it speaks to the self-reflexive dialectic formed between structured composition and improvisational acts as they unfold over time.
Crystalline Morphologies will be releasing music on vinyl, cassette, and digital, as well as an online archive of past radio programs broadcast weekly on Kchung Radio since 2011.
The first two releases are ‘companion’ vinyl records documenting two separate performances by Gabie Strong, with additional vinyl projects in the works from such artists as Renee Petropoulos, Geneva Skeen, White Boy Screams, Gate (trio), Michael Morley+Bill Orcutt, and Shelter Death (Christopher Reid Martin), among others.
